After months of planning and weeks of hard work by passionate volunteers from Los Verdes and so many more from our fellow Supporter’s Groups, another stunning tifo was raised in front of the south end at McKalla before Austin FC’s home opener match against Minnesota United FC. The design—created in collaboration between Chris Tobar, Marcos Morales, and Rico Hernandez—is a tribute to the rich history of Black cowboys here in Texas as kept alive in vivid detail at the Black Cowboy Museum founded by Larry Callies.

[Black cowboys] didn't get any praise, they didn't get anything in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. And they did all the work on the ranches. They did everything—they were picking cotton on the ranch and doing the hay, and then they started riding horses and working cows. I want to give them their due.

Putting It All Together

For Rico, pitching this tifo was about our roots:

This meant to me that we are not only supporting the team but also our community—our Black community—and acknowledging and celebrating its significant contribution to our foundational history.

As Rico and Marcos worked with Los Verdes tifo leads to bring their pitch to life, they found Tobar’s immersive work Neon Rodeo, which started the artist down a path of connection between the iconography of cowboys and his own legacy, inspiring the shades of purple and verde on the finished canvas.

I'm Black and Puerto Rican, so I'm inspired by the Black cowboy and the Latin cowboy...I wanted to have fun with it. I wanted to bring color to it and add vibrancy.

Honrando el Legado del Vaquero Afroamericano: Nuestro tifo de Apertura de la Temporada 2026

Tras meses de planificación y semanas de trabajo arduo por parte de voluntarios apasionados de Los Verdes y muchos más de nuestros Grupos de Hinchas, se erigió otro tifo impresionante en el lado sur del estadio McKalla. Este tifo es para el partido inaugural de Austin FC contra Minnesota United FC. El diseño, creado en colaboración entre Chris Tobar, Marcos Morales y Rico Hernández, es un homenaje a la rica historia de los vaqueros afroamericanos aquí en Texas.

[Los vaqueros negros] no recibieron ningún elogio, no recibieron nada en los años 50, 60 y 70. Y hacían todo el trabajo en los ranchos. Lo hacían todo: recogían algodón en el rancho y sembraban el heno, y luego empezaron a montar a caballo y a trabajar con las vacas. Quiero reconocerles su mérito.

Mientras Rico y Marcos trabajaban con los líderes de tifo de Los Verdes para dar vida a su idea, descubrieron la obra inmersiva Neon Rodeo de Tobar. El diseño del tifo impulsó al artista en un camino de conexión entre la iconografía de los vaqueros y su propio legado, inspirando los tonos púrpura y verde en el lienzo terminado.

Soy negro y puertorriqueño, así que me inspira el vaquero negro y también el vaquero latino... Quería divertirme con eso. Quería darle color y dinamismo.
